The Sumner Tennis and Squash Club has begun a major refurbishment of its club rooms to bring facilities up to 21st century standards.
According to club President, Phil Loughnan, the quality of the facilities will be the match of any club in Canterbury, especially given the club’s rare position as a provider of both squash and tennis courts. The club is already experiencing strongly growing membership and activity, and this is expected to accelerate once the community becomes aware of the great facilities being created.
The refurbishment includes a new lounge and bar space with full length windows overlooking the tennis courts, modernised bathrooms, new squash floor systems and insulated squash courts, upgraded tennis court lighting and a new outdoor area with a family barbeque area.
In the past 5 years, the club has completed the repair of all 4 tennis courts and strengthened the building structure to 67% of NBS. Local fundraising by club members including Deuce cook book and Sumner Streets tea towel sales, and the recent Sumner boxing and dance events have greatly assisted in supplementing insurance proceeds.
Work is expected to be completed this spring, in time for the club’s Tiki Spring tennis tournament.
